It’s all happening in Rasen this Saturday
On Saturday September 1st Market Rasen Business Improvement Group (MR BIG) is throwing its biggest and best ever market yet, as part of their Portas Pilot promise to “put the market back in Market Rasen”. Billed as the “Summer Lovin’ Market”, and fully embracing a 1970 theme, visitors of all ages are invited to “get their groove on” and arrive in 1970 fancy dress, with £10 spot prizes for the best! There will be 50 stall holders, a pop up indoor craft market in the high street, seaside style bingo, Market Rasen themed peep boards, free face paining for children, a host of offers and freebies from the high street to enjoy, buskers performing the best summer songs and an after market party with live music too! Or for those feeling more adventurous there’s a late afternoon race meeting at Market Rasen Race Course, with the first race at 4.45pm. If that wasn’t enough – after the racing, Rasen will see James Morrison performing live for race-goers. Starting at 9am and with things to do until late into the evening, visitors from across Lincolnshire, and beyond, are invited to see summer out in style in Market Rasen, making use of the five free car parks in the town, or by coming into town by train or bus!
MR BIG invites everyone (stall holders, shop owners and visitors) to join in with a Summer of Love fancy dress, with £10 spot prizes for the best outfits seen by MR BIG’s judges.
And to give a fantastic old tradition a new twist, MR BIG has commissioned three seaside ‘peepboards’ for people to photograph their friends and family peeking through.
“We all know the classic peep boards from the seaside,” says MR BIG’s volunteer director for social media Angela Montague, “where you pop your head through a silly picture to have your photo taken looking like the people in the picture. Well, we’ve created three boards with some very Market Rasen themes so people can bring this tradition bang up to date by taking photos of family and friends with the boards to share on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! And we want to say a huge thank you to local artists Emma Brown who created this brilliant artwork for free and Jackson Building Supplies who donated the materials.”
The 40 plus Summer Lovin’ market stalls will offer gifts, plants, health and beauty, local honey, cakes, and the artisan and specialist food Lincolnshire is rightly so well known for. MR BIG will have a stall too, selling their ‘Heart Market Rasen’ t shirts, bags, mugs and umbrellas. They’ll also be collecting entries for the design a T shirt competition, click this link for full details.
MR BIG has also arranged for a pop up craft market indoors, at the CG Partnership rooms (located off Queen Street in the passageway next to the former Arena Cafe).
Discover our Pop Up Craft gallery down the passage to the left of this high street shop!
For the children there will be candyfloss, popcorn and rock (for summer themed treats) and free face painting.
There will also be family Bingo under the auction shed in the market square, and throughout the market the soundtrack of the 30 best ever summer songs performed live by local buskers.
Starting at 9am in the town’s Georgian market place, there will also be an After Party at local pub The George, with live music from ‘Stark’. Or for those feeling more adventurous there’s a late afternoon race meeting at Market Rasen Race Course, with the first race at 4.45pm. If that wasn’t enough – after the racing, Rasen will see James Morrison performing live for race-goers.
Jackie Smith, MR BIGs Market Director said, ‘It’s great to see Market Rasen putting itself on the map as a great shopping destination and events venue. This weekend there really will be something for everyone – young and old, local people and visitors from further afield. We’ve pulled out all the stops to make this market the best one yet, and ask anyone who’s wondering how things are going in our Portas Pilot town, to come and see first hand!”

MR BIG is gearing up for a bumper market on Saturday the 1st September, with more stalls than ever before. Coming at the end of the summer holidays the theme is ‘Summer Lovin’ – with a nostalgic 70s vibe, a seaside flavour and summer entertainments including Bingo under the Auction shed, seaside-style peep-through boards for family photos, rock, candy floss and traders and visitors being invited to raid their wardrobes for some flower-power outfits.
Children (and grown ups) are being invited to get involved early with a colouring-in competition. Using the distinctive heart from the ‘I love MKT RSN’ t-shirts and shopping bags, MR BIG is inviting budding artists to create their own heart designs, depicting what they love best about Market Rasen. Entries will be collected at the MR BIG stall on the 1st of September, displayed in town. Winners – chosen ahead of the October market – will have their designs converted into their very own t-shirts.
Competition templates will be available from retailers along the main street, or can be printed off by clicking this link: T Shirt Competition
MR BIG volunteer director of Community Arts & Culture, Sarah Lamballe
MR BIG volunteer director of Community Arts & Culture, Sarah Lamballe popped down to Market Rasen Primary School on Thursday, 9th August to present medals at the local MORE THAN GOLD Holiday Club run by volunteers from New Life Church.
50 youngsters, aged 7-11 were enjoying Olympic themed fun and games and having a fabulous time learning new skills and team work, whilst enjoying the sunshine at long last.
In addition to presenting bronze, silver and gold medals to the teams on the ‘Olympic
podium’, Sarah presented six I LOVE MARKET RASEN mugs, from MR BIG, to children
chosen by youth worker, Rhona Shepherd, for their fantastic artwork created that day.

Sarah said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere, with Chariots of Fire playing in the background as the torch bearer ran in from the field and selected one of the teams to ‘light’ the cauldron – the kids themselves were operating the sound system and came up with a fabulous crackle sound, to help Paul Hiley, as master of ceremonies, add to the drama of the occasion!”
Sarah added “I was delighted to be invited to represent MR BIG and take the opportunity to tell our young people a bit about what we are trying to achieve as business owners, working with the community and town council to make Market Rasen a better place, to live, work and to visit. It was a pleasure to thank them for their help and support. In true Olympic spirit, I hope together we can inspire a generation.”
